What happens if I miss a Spanish tax deadline?
The deadline runs from notification, not from when you read it.
That one sentence sums up the whole risk of living abroad and owning here: the deadline starts when the letter is delivered, not when someone opens it.
A letter in March, a letterbox opened in July
A notice delivered on 3 March opens its deadline on 3 March, even if the letterbox is opened in July. Electronic notification works the same way: many are deemed served by the mere passage of time, read or not.
Nobody is going to repeat the warning because you were away.
Filing late usually beats not filing
Once the deadline has passed, the usual reaction is to wait, for fear of drawing attention. That is generally the worst option: filing late on your own initiative and filing nothing at all are not treated the same.
