Spanish healthcare for non-residents
You spend five months a year here. Who treats you if you fall?
Almost every foreign owner on this coast believes they are covered, and almost none knows through which route. The difference between the three possible routes shows up on the day you end up in A&E, and that is the worst day to discover it.
What you get
- A written study of your case: through which route you are covered in Spain today, if you are at all.
- What your European health card covers exactly, and above all what it does NOT once your stay stops being temporary.
- Whether the S1 form applies to you as a pensioner, and which body in your country issues it.
- The special agreement file with Spanish social security when no other route exists, with its requirements checked.
- Registration at your health centre and the assignment of a doctor, once the route is settled.
Why this matters now
European social security coordination distinguishes a TEMPORARY stay, which the European card covers, from residence, which it does not. A pensioner with an S1 form is entitled to Spanish public healthcare at their home country's cost. And whoever fits neither can sign the special agreement with Spanish social security, which requires, among other things, a year of padrón registration in Spain. Three different doors — and going through the wrong one costs a hospital invoice.
What this service is NOT
We are not doctors, not insurance brokers, and we do not sell private policies: we take commission from no insurer, and if a private policy is your answer we will say so without charging for saying it. The right is recognised by the INSS or by your regional health service, and they may ask for one more document. And emergencies are always treated: nobody is left without emergency care in Spain for lack of papers.
Questions about this service
I have a European health card. Isn't that enough?
It depends how long you spend here and what for. It covers necessary care during a temporary stay, not planned treatment and not a stay that has stopped being temporary. It is the most expensive confusion we see.
I am a British pensioner. Am I still entitled?
In many cases yes, through the S1 route, issued by your own country's body and not by Spain. We look at your specific case and tell you who to write to, rather than handing you a general rule that may not be yours.
Can the special agreement be refused?
It can, and the requirement that defeats it most often is the prior padrón registration. That is why the first thing we look at is your padrón, and why this service and the padrón one are often asked for together.
