When the holiday house becomes the house
Spanish residency: TIE and EU registration
The day you stop being a tourist, three things change at once
Almost nobody decides on a Tuesday to become a resident: they realise a year later that they already were. And then they meet the foreigners' register, the town-hall roll, the health system and the tax office all at once — four doors that open in one order, and only one.
What you get
- A ruling on your route: EU citizen registration certificate, TIE, or neither.
- The list of means you must evidence in your case, and the form that evidence must take.
- The complete file with the official form and the fee prepared.
- The appointment at the office you belong to, and what to physically bring that day.
- The calendar of what changes afterwards: town-hall roll, healthcare, 183 days and modelo 210.
Why this matters now
Royal Decree 240/2007 requires EU citizens staying more than three months to register in the Central Register of Foreigners; the certificate this produces is not a card and not an identity document, and after five years it is exchanged for the permanent one. For other nationalities the route is the TIE, whose fee is set by Order PJC/617/2025. And the link almost nobody makes: being resident and being TAX resident are two different things, and the second is crossed on its own at 183 days of presence. The market charges €120 to €250 for documents with an appointment.
What this service is NOT
We are not immigration lawyers and we do not run appeals: if your case comes from a refusal, an irregular stay or an arraigo claim, that is a law firm, and we will say so on day one. Nor do we decide for you whether becoming a resident suits you: that has tax and sometimes inheritance consequences, and an adviser is the one who calculates them. We build the file for a step you have already decided to take.
Questions about this service
I am European. Isn't my passport enough?
For three months, yes. Beyond that the rule asks for registration, and without it you will be missing the paper when the family doctor, the school or the bank asks for it. It is not a residence card: it is a certificate, on paper, carrying your NIE.
Does becoming a resident force me to pay tax in Spain?
Not automatically, but administrative and tax residence usually end up coinciding. Tax residence is crossed by days of presence and centre of interests, not by the card. That is the conversation to have BEFORE, not in June of the following year.
What if I only come for six months a year?
Then you are exactly on the edge, and the answer depends on counted days, not impressions. We have a free tool to count them and a service dedicated to the 90/180 rule: start there before applying for anything.
