The account is what makes your NIE useful
Without a Spanish account you cannot direct-debit the council tax, the electricity or the community fees, and a property reservation gets paid by international transfer. The account is not one more formality: it is the one that unlocks the others.

Why this matters now
The bank identifies a foreigner by their NIE, and from someone who does not live here it also asks for the non-residence certificate, renewed every two years. That paper expires without warning and the bank asks for it once a payment has already bounced. The order matters: first the NIE, then the certificate, then the account. The other way round works on no day of the year.

The opening is the bank's decision and it may ask for one more document on the day. Questions about this service
Can I open it before I have the NIE?
Some banks open a non-resident account on a passport, but to set up direct debits and to sign a purchase you will need the NIE anyway. We prepare both at once so you do not lose a trip.
Do I have to go in person?
Yes, almost always, at least once. If you cannot come, some banks accept a power of attorney; we tell you which ones and what powers that document has to contain.
What about non-resident charges?
The bank sets them and they vary a lot between institutions. We do not negotiate them for you, but before the appointment we put them in writing, compared, so you choose knowing.
