The card people look for the day they need a doctor
SIP health card and family doctor
The health card does not arrive on its own, and the day you need it is too late
The SIP is the card that gets you seen at your town's health centre. It does not come in the post when you arrive: it has to be applied for, and before that you have to be on the municipal register.
What you get
- A check of which route applies to you: registered resident, pensioner with an S1, or special agreement.
- The complete file for the regional health department, with the copies they require and do not mention.
- The appointment at your health centre, booked and confirmed.
- The assignment of a family doctor, and the change if the one assigned is not in your town.
- A written explanation of how to book appointments afterwards, in your language and with screenshots.
Why this matters now
The SIP card is issued by the regional health department and its starting point is municipal registration: without being on your town's register there is no card, and without a card there is no assigned doctor. The European visitor here for a few weeks is covered by the European health insurance card, which is a different thing and gives no family doctor. Confusing the two is what lands people in private A&E.
What this service is NOT
We are not a medical centre or an insurer: we do not give you an appointment with a doctor, we express no opinion on your health and we sell no insurance. The card is granted by the health administration, with its own requirements and timescales. If your situation gives no right to a SIP, we tell you on day one and explain the alternative.
Questions about this service
I come for three months a year, do I need it?
Probably not. If you are European and come seasonally, what you need is your country's European health insurance card. The SIP is for those registered here. We tell you that before charging you for a file that will not help you.
What if I am a pensioner from another European country?
Then the route is the S1 form from your country, which entitles you to Spanish public healthcare as a resident. We prepare that file and take it to the social security office.
How long does it take?
The health centre appointment is usually given within days. The physical card follows by post, and the number is already active in the meantime: we tell you how to use it.
