Enrolling your children in a Spanish school
School does not wait for you to finish the move
School admission runs on a calendar that opens and closes in spring, and it does not care when you signed the deed. Arriving in August does not put you outside the system, but it puts you through a different door — and you have to know where that door is.
What you get
- A ruling on your case: ordinary admission within the deadline, or late enrolment outside it.
- The list of your country's documents that must be translated and apostilled, and those that must not.
- The online admission file prepared with your details and those of the school you chose.
- The prior papers that are almost always missing: town-hall registration and the children's health card.
- Your year's written calendar: when lists are published, when to enrol, and what happens if you do not.
Why this matters now
In the Valencian Community admission is filed online with the regional education department, and from the first step the file asks for the family's town-hall registration and the child's health cover — two papers the newcomer almost never has yet, applied for elsewhere and on another clock. Whoever arrives after the deadline goes through late enrolment, handled by the municipal office, which allocates a place where there is one, not where you want one. A minor's right to education does not depend on the parents' administrative situation: that is not in doubt. The particular school is.
What this service is NOT
We are not the school or the education department and we do not obtain places: points come from the scale — address, siblings, income — and we do not alter it. Nor do we choose a school for you or compare the quality of two schools: that is an opinion, and we do not sell opinions. And we are not sworn translators; their invoice is separate and we tell you beforehand. What we do is make the file arrive complete and on time.
Questions about this service
We arrive in October. Will the child have no school?
No. Late enrolment exists exactly for that and is handled by the municipal enrolment office. What changes is not the right but the choice: a place is allocated among those left, which is why it pays to be on the list on day one rather than day ten.
Does the child need to speak Spanish or Valencian?
Not to be admitted. Schools run language reception programmes and the language is worked on inside the school. What is worth knowing is which language your chosen school teaches in, because it varies in this region — and that is checked BEFORE setting your order of preference.
We have the birth certificate in English. Is that enough?
It almost always has to be translated by a sworn translator, and sometimes apostilled in the country that issued it — which can no longer be done from here. It is the paper that delays the most files, and it is the first one we look at.
